Since Abeka Phonics is built on front-end blending, this little book with its 45 word-building frames, provides lots of practice exercises for the emerging reader. The blend ladders start with consonants added to short vowels – students read up or down the ladder blending the sounds. For example: b ? – b?, b ? - b?, b ? – b?, b ? - b?, or b ? – b?. Practicing up and down the ladder builds decoding speed and prepares the student for adding ending consonants. The back of each ladder mixes up the combinations so students learn to rely on comprehension over memorization. Periodically, as you work through the little book, ladders mix the letter blends for review and reinforcement. After working through all the beginning consonant/short vowel blends, the ladders provide three-and-four-letter words, with a selection of five-letter words (silent e and vowel pairs) provided at the end of the book. 48 pgs, pb.
